The Fine Print & Resources
OUR POLICIES
Dahlia purchases- Please look over your order upon arrival and if you have any issues, please contact us within 5 days. We will take it on a case by case basis.
Let's face it, dahlia tubers are pretty ugly! They can come in some odd shapes and the sizes vary greatly, yet they can all produce amazing plants with plentiful blooms with given the right conditions. Dahlia tubers have a learning curve. It's beneficial to educate yourself on the care of these plants for the best success. We would appreciate the chance to help you figure out a solution if you have any difficulties. We also ask that you refrain from posting about a order issues online before allowing us to address it. We are working hard to build our small business, we put a lot of research into learning the best practices, and we produce the best product that mother nature and other variables allow us to. Mistakes do happen, and we ask for grace and tempered expectations.
If for some reason we cannot fulfill your order, we will refund you promptly and contact you to let you know. Most of what we sell is seasonal & perishable and that means having realistic expectations as a customer about the nature of the product you are purchasing. We can only refund the purchase price of the affected item. We will not refund any shipping fees or be responsible for any other perceived losses.
Shipping (dahlia tubers)- We will try to ensure a safe delivery through proper packaging. Dahlia purchases will NOT ship until it is safe to do so (closer to planting time to prevent tubers from freezing in transit). Local pickup is available for those that live near Pendleton, OR. Select the pickup option at checkout and contact me for an appointment to come pickup your order (they will be available later this spring when conditions are close to ideal for planting). We request up to 3 days to prepare your order.
Sanitation practices/disease prevention for our dahlia crop- We inspect all of our tuber stock carefully for diseases and issues while in storage and before planting. As the crop starts growing, we check our plants often and make notes of anything to watch. We treat any harmful insect pressure carefully to prevent them spreading any possible disease also.
Our first line of defense is beneficial insect application to prevent infestations, and we will utilize other methods as needed and as recommended by experts in the field. Any plant that shows signs of disease gets pulled right away and disposed of properly to prevent spread. When processing tubers for storage, we sanitize our tools between plants. That being said, dahlias in general do struggle some with viruses and gall issues (it's wide spread and can affect any grower no matter how careful they are). Therefore, we cannot guarantee against these issues. We encourage you to educate yourself on the common issues with dahlias and to look for any plants that might need to be tossed to protect the rest (here is a link to a guide on growing dahlias, a link about dahlia viruses, and a link to a PDF on gall issues in dahlias). It is tough to cull a plant, but worth the sacrifice for future success.
Dahlias are amazing, impressive, and there is so much good that comes from growing dahlias so I suppose it makes sense they do have a few issues that go along with the joy they bring.
Bouquet Purchases/Subscriptions: We want all our customers to be pleased with their flowers. If you feel your bouquet had an exceptionally short vase life despite doing the things we recommend to prolong vase life (regular water changes, trimming the ends every couple days, placing the flowers carefully) and you would like a refund please reach out. It's important to understand the fragile nature of flower vase life and the issues that affect how well they last and to have realistic expectations. Placing a bouquet even for a short time in a hot car, or in a location that is too warm, near a sunny window or ripening fruit will diminish vase life considerably. I cannot be held responsible for less-than-ideal handling issues, but if you feel you have taken every precaution for fresh flowers then I will issue a pro-rated refund of your purchase. Weather conditions can temporarily affect vase life so some grace with this issue is much appreciated. I take precautions by harvesting in the early mornings or in evenings during the coolest part of the day and we buy post-harvest products to help treat the water to make your flowers last as long as possible. If for some reason you wish to cancel your subscription, we can refund your remaining subscription. I cannot refund any more than the value that is left on the subscription. We want happy customers so please reach out with reasonable requests and we will take it on a case by case situation.:)
** IMPORTANT WARNING!**
Did you know sweet peas are very toxic? I was shocked and would have assumed they were edible based on their close relative being a snap pea or shelling pea meant for consumption! Many flowers are TOXIC and can be deadly! Yes, even the ones in the grocery store you see regularly and they do not feature any warning labels. It is also likely that some of the flowers and plants growing in your yard right now are poisonous. Please use common sense and caution with kids, pets, and be careful where you dispose of the spent flowers too. I realize this is somewhat off-putting of a statement to make as a flower farmer trying to sell flowers. Many growers do not disclose this risk, but I feel it is important to ensure that people know. I have seen a lot of trends lately of people adding flowers to food items and promoting edible flowers, it's very important to be aware that there are many toxic flowers too and they carry risk just like other things we regularly have in our homes like our household cleaners, vitamins and medications, etc. Purchaser assumes all risk and Summerfield Acres will not be held liable for any issues with toxicity of flowers. Our bouquets may feature some of these types of flowers, because they are beautiful and very popular blooms. If you would like more information on what flowers are toxic feel free to reach out and I can help direct you to that info and share what I know so far.**
Photos on our site- We try hard to get accurate photos of each product and variety, but it can be difficult to get an accurate portrayal of the unique colors or qualities. Last year we weren't able to get a lot of variety photos due to an early frost, I just ran out of time! We try to include a link to Google Image Search Results for any variety that the photo might not show the full representation or if a photo is not available. Our hope is that this will make it easier for you to see the variety examples as you shop ( however we can't control what the search engines show on those links so please use caution).
